Feeling Stuck in Your Sports Season? Start With Your Goals

There comes a point in some sports seasons when we may begin to feel stuck, frustrated, or discouraged. Maybe your performance isn’t where you hoped it would be, or you’re putting in the work but aren’t seeing the results. When this happens, it can be helpful to take a step back and reflect on your goals.

Goal-setting is an important part of athletic development and mental performance. Short-term goals provide direction for the coming weeks, long-term goals guide your progress throughout the season, and future goals help you envision where you want to go in your athletic career.

Sports psychology also emphasizes the difference between process goals and outcome goals. Outcome goals focus on results, such as winning a match or improving your ranking. Process goals focus on the actions you can control, such as staying focused after a mistake, committing to your training plan, or following your pre-performance routine.

Both types of goals have a purpose, but focusing on the process can help you stay present and build confidence rather than getting caught up in results you cannot fully control.

If you’re feeling stuck, revisit your goals. Are they realistic for where you are right now? Are you focusing on what you can control? Sometimes, a small shift in your goals can help you regain direction and motivation.

Working with a mental performance coach, sports psychologist, or therapist who specializes in working with athletes can help you identify goals that align with your needs and strengthen your mental game.

Remember: Progress isn’t always about working harder. Sometimes, it’s about refocusing on what matters most.
